Mae and Michael’s Colorful Meadow Pizza Party Wedding at their Family’s Property in East Montpelier, Vermont
I met up with Mae and Michael in the middle of the winter to connect with them and familiarize myself with Mae’s family’s beloved property- a farmhouse surrounded by rolling hills and mountains just outside of Montpelier, the capitol of Vermont. We strapped on our cross country skis and herded our dogs outside into the powdery white world, where Mae and Michael pointed out the spots where the tent would sit, where they’d say their vows, and the party barn where their night would finish up. They told me about how this space had been their haven in the midst of the Covid lockdowns and how excited they were to share it with Michael’s family, who would be flying there from Australia.
I knew by June their wintry world would be transformed into the bright greens of a Vermont June but nothing prepared me for the beauty and texture of the hills surrounding their little white farmhouse when I arrived last weekend. The grass was festooned with the jewels of ten thousand raindrops, embracing the tent in the midst of the field with the wild organic lines of grasses bent by wind and rain. Lindsey of Mavinhouse and the team at June Farm had covered the tables and tent with an explosion of pastels mixed with brighter hues- a reflection of Mae and Michael’s simultaneously kind, chill, and vibrant personalities combined.
Beyond the visuals, the heart of Mae and Michael’s wedding was the deep feeling of gratitude. The presence of Michael’s family who had made the long trip from Australia, and the gift of Mae’s Mom in attendance, who has been battling cancer for nine years, felt victorious. Mae’s grandmother danced the night away, and Mae’s nine week old niece, Nell, was lovingly held by adoring family members throughout the night. Thank you to Mae and Michael and to Lindsey from Mavinhouse Events, for collaborating alongside me for what has become one of my favorite weddings in a long time.
